FiveThirtyEight:
The Trumpiest Republicans Are At The State And Local Levels - Not In D.C.

Friend,

There are plenty of extreme GOP members of Congress -- but what's scarier is that many state-level Republicans are even worse. And if we aren't careful -- if we don't work to end anti-democratic practices like gerrymandering and voter suppression -- those people and their ideas could start making it to Washington in higher numbers.

Generally speaking, the pipeline of legislators and policies flows up from the states to D.C. -- and that includes the most radical legislators and the most regressive policies. Just think about anti-choice legislation: Bills restricting reproductive rights gained a critical mass in the states before getting traction at the federal level. Similarly, extreme politicians like Jim Jordan and Matt Gaetz started out in state legislatures.

Gerrymandering plays a key role in this process. It allows the GOP to have a lock on many state legislatures and pass whatever far-right policies they want. It also facilitates the election of radical politicians, and then it helps them get to Washington.

I can't emphasize this enough: Ending gerrymandering is critical to blocking the pipeline of extremism to Congress. Can you help us get it done in 2021?

We're working in 15 battleground states, including Republican-dominated states like Texas, North Carolina, and Florida, to secure the fairest possible maps across the country and give ourselves a shot at stopping the spread of extremism. Our work depends on contributions from people like you. If you can, please pitch in now.

Thanks,
Garrett

A.G. Holder: If the NDRC is successful in undoing manipulated maps, we will be able to achieve a system in which everyone's vote counts.

Since 2017, the NDRC has executed a comprehensive redistricting strategy that shifts the redistricting power, creating fair districts where Democrats can compete. Our victories have been made possible by our strong community of grassroots supporters.
