Rep. Deb Haaland, a Laguna Pueblo woman and 35th generation New Mexican, is poised to be the next secretary of the interior. If confirmed, she'll be the first Native American Cabinet secretary in U.S. history, marking a meaningful step toward racial justice and climate progress.
Predictably, though, politicians with entrenched fossil fuel interests are trying to block her confirmation. In recent weeks, Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT), Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY), and Rep. Pete Stauber (R-MN) have all caricatured Haaland as a "radical."
The facts tell a different story: Recent Data for Progress polling shows that many of the policies Haaland would enact as interior secretary—like land and water conservation and increasing renewable energy production on public lands—are popular with voters across the political spectrum. In the 116th Congress, Rep. Haaland introduced more bills with bicameral support than any other member of the House, and four of those bills were signed into law—an impressive feat in our polarized era.
