Hi John,
We’ve got big plans for 2021. ICYMI last week we voted to unanimously endorse the amazing Karishma Mehta in Virginia’s 49th House District. And as you already know if you attended this month’s virtual Reggaeton Bash, the lockdown won’t stop us from having fun and building community while we fight for a Green New Deal in the DMV. Check out a few of our upcoming events, meetings, and volunteer opportunities below and GET IN! Energy Justice Town Hall TONIGHT! Tuesday, Feb 23 at 6:00pm Join We Power DC (a coalition of local orgs including Sunrise DC) for an interactive town hall about energy justice. We’ll hear from partner organizations and DC residents about utility debt, shutoffs, and what a Pepco-free DC focused on clean energy and good jobs for all could look like. Sign up here! Youth Organizing! Friday, Feb 26 at 6:30pm Our goal is to recruit more high schoolers / youth to the hub. We’ll be working on various projects including reaching out to DCPS schools, creating a youth friendly teach-in, and promoting art-builds to engage anyone just getting started! Who knows, we may even be planning the next Open Hub Meeting 😊 Join us - the link to Friday’s call will be in Slack! Transformative Justice Teach-In Wednesday, March 3 at 8:30pm We’re hosting a teach-in to explore Transformative Justice in depth along with folx from One Common Unity, They/Them Collective, and Casa Ruby. The teach in will feature a short presentation to give a brief overview of transformative justice. Afterwards, there will be an open discussion/town hall forum followed by a Q&A session to further discuss how transformative justice can be used within our community. Sign up here to join us! Volunteers needed! Uprise DMV happening in May 2021 Uprise DMV is a first-of-its-kind virtual festival and discussion bringing activism and music together for a 4-hour event about justice, organizing, and fundraising. We want to activate Black DMV residents, the local hip hop/gogo community, and local young people to take action by demystifying the solutions to generational issues and engaging with local talent, while also supporting and raising funds for underserved, undocumented, unhoused, and incarcerated people. This event will also uplift local Black-led organizing efforts by centering and raising funds for Black organizers and providing a platform for artists from historically underserved Black and brown communities in the DMV. We need YOUR help to pull it off! There are many roles and ways to help so we made a short and sweet form for you to find out how to support (whether big or small).
Group Onboarding calls are happening every Wednesday at 7pm New to the hub or looking to re-engage? Sign up for this call to learn more about Sunrise DC and find ways to plug into the hub!
You can check out all of our upcoming events and meetings on our calendar - we’ve got new projects, new teams, and new identity caucuses meeting on a regular basis. And of course the place to really stay connected is in our Slack - if you’ve been away for a while come back, we miss you! ❤️
See you soon, Sunrise DC
