Last year, the Supreme Court ruled in a landmark decision that employers
can't fire someone based on their gender identity or sexual orientation.
This was a historic win for equality and justice in America — but there's
more work to be done.
Congress must take the next step to protect LGBTQIA+ people from
discrimination not only in the workplace but in housing, other public
accommodations, health care, education, and all across America. That's why
I helped re-introduce the Equality Act in the House last week.

Democratic White House and a Democratic Senate, we can finally pass this
life-saving civil rights legislation into law.

The
Equality Act is personal for me and my family.
A few years ago, my beautiful child Janak told me that they were
non-binary. As a mother, I came to understand that for the first time, my
child finally felt genuinely free to be who they are.
With that freedom comes a responsibility for us as legislators — to
legislate with love and not fear. As the proud mom of a transgender child,
I know how much work remains to ensure that all LGBTQIA+ people can live
their lives with real equality and full civil rights in this country. I
stand with my child and every LGBTQIA+ person in America as I fight to
pass the Equality Act and finally send it to the president's desk.

LGBTQIA+ Americans can live freely as themselves and free from
discrimination.
