Friend,
With Texas in the eye of a political storm—and state residents the latest victims of callous indifference by those who put profits over people—there's no better time to recognize that the prevailing system is not broken but in fact working exactly as intended.
As our longtime friend and ally Naomi Klein writes in a new op-ed, what has unfolded in the Lone Star State over the last week encapsulates so much about what is wrong with our politics and why the fight for a more progressive, sustainable, and egalitarian future remains the key battle of our time.
"Texans," writes Klein, "are living through the collapse of a 40-year experiment in free-market fundamentalism, one that has also stood in the way of effective climate action. Fortunately, there's a way out—and that's precisely what Republican politicians in the state most fear."
The promise of the Green New Deal—a construct that says we can heal the planet, lift up workers, and bring the economy into closer harmony with human dignity—is a nightmare for those who only care about shareholder profits and political dominance.
"Of course the Green New Deal finds itself under fierce attack," says Klein. "Because for the first time in a long time, Republicans face the very thing that they claim to revere but never actually wanted: competition—in the battle of ideas."
Covering the "battle of ideas" is at the heart of what Common Dreams has been doing for the last two and a half decades. A news outlet aligned with the common good, not corporate power. An outlet pushing back against the neoliberal, extractivist mentality that has controlled the centers of power for far too long.
The reason we can regularly feature radical voices like Naomi Klein's without fear of retribution from advertisers or corporate overlords is because of donations from readers like you. Will you chip in to help reach our Winter Fundraising Campaign goal of $75,000 by March 2?
As lawmakers like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez showed over the weekend, all of our fates are bound together and the future we are fighting for is one we all must share—together. Our lowercase common dreams are not opposed because they are so bad—but because they are so good.
Our promise is to make sure that the on-the-ground warriors struggling for a better world always receive the front-page coverage they deserve. At Common Dreams, we remain committed to lifting up the big solutions that threaten the most powerful, but this people-powered media model is only possible with the support of readers like you.
Will you support our mission today so we can continue this fight?
