Friend,
Today, the New Jersey legislature voted for — and Governor Murphy signed — legislation to legalize marijuana for adult use, following a successful ballot question in November where voters overwhelmingly demonstrated their support for it.
Thank you for making this victory possible! DPA is proud to have worked alongside supporters like you for nearly two decades in New Jersey and it’s exciting to see legalization finally become a reality.
Our advocacy and political arm, Drug Policy Action, backed the successful ballot initiative that won last November. Since then, our allies on the ground have been working to ensure that Governor Murphy and the legislature came to an agreement on how to implement legalization — and today they did.
The bills signed by Governor Murphy will legalize adult-use marijuana, decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana, limit the use of previous marijuana convictions, and create a regulated marijuana marketplace.
There have been more than 32,000 arrests a year for marijuana in New Jersey, the vast majority just for simple possession and disproportionately targeting Black and Latinx people, at a cost of $143 million annually.
Legalizing marijuana will have a profound impact on stopping these senseless, racially-biased arrests and addressing the tragic consequences of prohibition.
Thanks to you, New Jersey has ended marijuana prohibition and is beginning to take steps toward building an equitable and inclusive market.
We're hoping this will be just one of several victories this year. DPA has also been working tirelessly on campaigns to legalize marijuana and repair the harms of prohibition in both New Mexico and New York and to push marijuana reform forward federally. We need you to help build on this momentum. Donate now to help us win even more marijuana reforms in 2021.
Sincerely,
Drug Policy Alliance
