In the United States, Black women are at least three times more likely than white women to die as a result of pregnancy. Here in Illinois, that number is even higher.
That is a tragedy and simply not acceptable in a nation with one of the strongest healthcare systems in the world. We can do better. We must do better.
That's why I am introducing the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act alongside Senator Cory Booker and my fellow Illinoisan, U.S. Representative Lauren Underwood. Here are some more details about what the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act will accomplish:
Invest in social determinants of health that influence maternal health outcomes, such as housing, transportation, and nutrition.
Study the unique maternal health risks facing pregnant and postpartum Veterans and support VA maternity care coordination programs.
Grow digital tools like telehealth to improve maternal health outcomes in underserved and rural areas.
Support moms with mental health or addiction issues as well as those who are incarcerated during pregnancy.
There are a LOT more important policies included in our Momnibus bill, but the bottom line is this: if America is a nation that cares about our moms and babies, we have to put our money where our mouth is. We have to invest in maternal healthcare -- especially for those moms of color that are most at risk.
