Democrat,

BIG NEWS! Governor Phil Murphy just signed legislation officially legalizing recreational marijuana in New Jersey, fulfilling one of his biggest campaign promises and ending decades of the failed war on drugs that has ravaged minority communities.

New Jersey will now become the 13th state to legalize marijuana, and in doing so it has established a national model for equity by also creating the most progressive system for expunging past convictions in the nation, automatically sealing low-level marijuana convictions and ensuring that tax revenue and jobs created by the new industry will flow to communities of color. Once the industry is up and running it is expected to create hundreds of millions of dollars in new tax revenue and thousands of jobs.

This is a big day, and we could not have gotten here without Governor Murphy’s steadfast leadership and the willingness of Democrats in the state legislature to keep working towards this goal. We couldn’t be more proud of our state!
