PFLAG Connects

Dear John:

Last week we celebrated Random Acts of Kindness Day, but here at PFLAG National, we work hard to not be random but very intentional about creating environments of kindness and inclusion. To that end, check out our Support section below, specifically focused on creating kindness and respect in online and other spaces.

Also, ICYMI, we had a great conversation with the stars and director of the new film COWBOYS. Check it out on YouTube or on Facebook (closed captions available on this platform). This lovely film, about a dad and his bond with his transgender son, is sure to move people and change hearts and minds.

Kindness and Respect During Virtual Meetings

As we rapidly approach the one-year anniversary of stay-at-home orders, many are struggling more than ever before. Are you feeling less motivated to participate in virtual meetings? Do you have a shorter fuse when you’re facilitating a group discussion online? We promise: It isn't just you.

PFLAG National is hosting a PFLAG Academy Online learning session entitled “Be Kind, Rewind: Recognizing Your Role in Building Inclusion” tomorrow, Tuesday, February 23 at 8:30 PM Eastern / 5:30 PM Pacific -- and you’re invited! During this workshop we’ll talk about what’s going on, what we can do about it, and how to center kindness and respect in the work we’re doing now and in the future.

Register for this timely and important session now.

Not available at that date and time? Are you a person who does your best learning in the morning? That’s OK! This workshop is being recorded, and all registrants will receive a link to the video via email on Wednesday morning. It will also be available on demand, to watch at a time that is best for you, at pflag.org/onlineacademy.

Education

Three Steps to Being a Better Advocate for the Equality Act (While You're Stuck at Home)

Just because you’re staying in doesn’t mean your learning should slow down! So, stay safe and take these steps to engage.

  1. Learn: Learn more about The Equality Act, what it would do if passed, and how it would protect our LGBTQ+ loved ones by reviewing the PFLAG National press release from February 18, 2021.
  2. Watch: Watch the PFLAG National video series Advocacy in 10 Minutes or Less and think about how you can adapt the lobbying and advocacy skills you learn for the realities of COVID-19. You can also watch Change the World in Two Minutes: How to Share Your Story (presented virtually for the first time!) to craft the Equality Act story you plan to share with your legislators.
  3. Share: Share accurate, up-to-date information about the Equality Act from resources that you trust, and like this opportunity to take action with PFLAG National. You can also help us spread the word about Something to Talk About Live this week and our March 2021 PFLAG Academy Online session focused on the Equality Act!
3 steps to being a better Equality Act advocate
It's time to pass the Equality Act. Congress must pass the Equality Act to provide consistent, explicit non-discrimination protections for our LGBTQ+ loved ones.

Advocacy

Tell your legislators: Vote YES on the Equality Act!

Last week, the Equality Act was introduced in the House. This week, it will be introduced in the Senate. While the House vote is likely to happen this week--and swiftly--there will no doubt be a battle on the Senate side, where we need 60 votes to pass this bill so that President Biden can sign comprehensive anti-discrimination policies into law.

Take action now, and ask your legislators to please vote YES on the Equality ActWe need your Representative and both of your Senators to vote in support of this legislation, which is so critical for our LGBTQ+ loved ones, and which will also strengthen protections for women, people of color, and people with disabilities. We're building our war room, but we need all PFLAG members and supporters with us, taking action!

Something to Talk About...Live!

Join PFLAG National live this Thursday, February 25th at 4:30 PM ET/1:30 PM for Something to Talk About Live. This week, we’re talking about the Equality Act, using the story "House expected to vote on sweeping LGBTQ rights bill next week," from NBC News, by writer Jo Yurcaba

You can watch us live on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and now on LinkedIn, too!
