Thanks to thousands of Mainers like you, Maine became one of the first states to ban single-use plastic bags in 2019. This was a huge victory for our health and the environment.

But now, the plastics industry - backed by Big Oil - is trying to capitalize on the pandemic to overturn policies like these, including Maine’s. They're spreading false information that reusable bags aren’t safe during the pandemic when scientists and health officials are finding that COVID-19 doesn’t commonly spread on surfaces and actually lives longer on plastic than on cloth or paper, making reusable bags a safer choice.

We must speak out now to ensure Maine lawmakers ignore special interest-fueled misinformation and continue to back this historic bill banning single-use plastic bags in Maine.

Producing and disposing of plastic bags creates a lot of pollution. Plastic bags are made from oil and gas that are drilled or fracked, refined, and then chemically processed into plastic and shipped to multiple factories and stores. All of these steps can pollute our air and water and exacerbate climate change. What’s worse - after we use them for mere minutes, plastic bags break down over tens to hundreds of years into particles that never go away. These micro- and nano-plastic particles are accumulating in our world and are found in our food, drinking water and even the air we breathe, threatening our health.

This is an immense and accelerating problem with some thankfully simple solutions. Forty-four percent of America’s plastic trash comes from packaging like plastic bags. We can simply use reusable packaging instead.

Thank you,

p.s. Hannaford and Shaws both allow customers to use reusable bags again. If you shop elsewhere, just call to ask if they do, too!
