Hope on the horizon

**A message from City Council Leader, Cllr David Mellen:**

It is encouraging that the Government is now in a position to outline its plans for easing restrictions and getting us back to some normality. The vaccination rollout which has already seen over 17 million people receive their jab has of course played a significant part in this; data is now showing that vaccinations are having a positive effect on stemming transmission and hospital admissions. And the restrictions we have all observed and endured in our daily lives have also had a huge role in stopping the spread of the virus, Id like to again thank everyone for your sacrifices here.

The Governments four-step roadmap announced today enables us to start to see a way out of this crisis. This plan sets out how restrictions can be eased gradually, with changes every five weeks if the Governments tests continue to be met.

The first step means that from the 8th March;


* Schools and colleges will be open for all students to return to face-to-face education
* Wrap around childcare and activities will also open
* We can leave home for recreation as well as exercise, with our household or one other person

From the 29th March


* Groups of six people or people from two different households will be able to meet outside including in private gardens
* Outdoor sports facilities such as tennis and basketball courts can be used.

We are all looking forward to the easing of restrictions but we must not let our guard down and must continue to stick to the rules and to take up the offer of a vaccination as soon as we receive one.

*Get your vaccination, Ive had mine*

I was delighted to get my vaccination at the weekend. I fall into cohort six as I am diabetic and so was called forward for my vaccination. I chose to go to the Richard Herrod Centre, as it was the closest site to my home in Sneinton. I used the Swift Queue website to book my appointment which was easy to use and offered a good choice of appointments over the upcoming week. I like most people am desperate to get back to normal and to be able to see loved ones without the risk of causing them harm. I also want to see schools and local business stay open and for the NHS to be able to focus on other health conditions that people need treating. The staff and volunteers involved in the local vaccination rollout are working incredibly hard and are welcoming and kind, this was abundantly clear to me when I had my vaccination. I would like to thank all involved for their marvellous efforts here.

Further options for survivors of domestic abuse in Nottingham are now available thanks to an initiative being delivered by the council, Nottingham City Homes and other local partners. 400,000 of funding from Homes England has been secured to acquire and refurbish eight homes, as part of the Governments Move On fund.

This will be a significant step forward for the women and families who, when ready, can move out of refuges and into these homes on their journey to a new permanent home. Importantly this will also free up capacity in refuges for those who are currently fleeing domestic violence and desperately need this accommodation and support.

Violence and abuse can destroy the lives of victims, their families and those closest to them. I am really pleased to see this collaborative initiative being delivered to help local families move on and rebuild their lives.
