John,
It’s been six weeks since the former President of the United States incited a violent insurrection against the U.S. Capitol, a shocking attack on our democracy that diminished our standing in the rest of the world. And if we’re going to stop it from ever happening again, we need to get to the bottom of how this attack happened in the first place.
Some things we already know: Ex-president Donald Trump pushed his Big Lie of voter fraud for months on end, making his followers believe that if he lost the 2020 presidential election, it could only have been because of massive fraud. He named the time and place. He used incendiary rhetoric up to the very moment that thousands of his right-wing supporters charged the Capitol, desecrated our nation’s legislature, injured about 140 police officers, and left five Americans dead.
And we know that the majority of elected Republicans in Congress stood by Trump, assisting in the spread of the Big Lie, and leading the formal effort to “stop the steal” by voting against the certification of the election and fighting to throw out the votes of millions of Americans. Then, they let him off the hook again, by refusing to convict him in his second impeachment trial.
But we know there’s more to it than that. Online, there were warnings of this event for months, with overwhelming evidence on social media and other websites of far-right extremists planning to do violence. A disturbing amount of former and current military members and law enforcement were involved in the insurrection. And it’s clear that there was an intelligence and law enforcement failure that prevented these warnings from being acted upon.
We need to get to the truth, discover how this failed coup was organized and how these serious threats to our national security were ignored, hold the responsible parties accountable, and make sure this never happens again.
That’s why we need a bipartisan 9/11-style commission to fully investigate the January 6th insurrection and all that led up to it.
Will you join us in calling for an official commission on the insurrection so we can get to the bottom of this and prevent it from ever happening again? Add your name next to mine now.
Republican Senators failed to convict Trump for his dereliction of duty when he incited this insurrection, but we can — and must — find out the full truth and take action.
