Today, as we watch Judge Merrick Garland’s confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, we are breathing a collective sigh of relief.

After four years of the Department of Justice being used as Trump’s political plaything, America can now look forward to having an honest and exceptional public servant as our Attorney General — one who will impartially enforce the laws of the land and seek justice for every American.

Today’s events remind me that five years ago Mitch McConnell refused to even hold a hearing on President Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland to serve on the Supreme Court!

That’s the kind of destructive politics McConnell is proud of — and the bare knuckle tactics he has used over and over again to block all progress and prevent debate in the U.S. Senate on anything he disagrees with — from protecting voting rights, to safe gun laws, climate change, support for struggling Americans and much more.

But Mitch McConnell doesn’t think he’s done.

McConnell recently told The Wall Street Journal that he's already mapping out his strategy to take back the Senate gavel. He's busy recruiting candidates and donors to defeat Democratic Senators like me who are running for re-election this cycle. We can’t let him succeed.

We need to be prepared for when McConnell inevitably turns his big money attack machine against us. Will you consider pitching in today to help us build a resilient grassroots campaign and protect our Senate majority in 2022?

Today’s a good day. We are moving forward to place talented, honest, experienced public servants into the key roles of our government to move our country forward on the issues of our day.

We need to make sure that this progress is not reversed in 2022. We can’t go back to McConnell controlling the Senate. We need to start the work now to build a larger Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate. With your help, we can do that.

Thank you again for your commitment to making our country a better place.
