Hi Friend,
People come to Doctors Without Borders from diverse places and backgrounds—and many have been impacted personally by our lifesaving work. Aisha Akello has been working in an MSF hospital in a camp for internally displaced people in Ngala, Nigeria since 2019. But her story with MSF began in 1988.
When Aisha was 8 years old, violent conflict forced her family to flee their village in northern Uganda to a camp for internally displaced people. One of her brothers suffered from severe malnourishment, and was rushed to a MSF therapeutic feeding center, where he received urgent treatment that saved his life.
Aisha lived with her family in a camp like Bidi Bidi refugee settlement, in northern Uganda, above.
Aisha’s brother is 32 years old now, and he has a son of his own. Aisha went on to study medicine and worked in a hospital near her village in Uganda when she encountered MSF again.
She joined MSF as a nurse in 2003 for four years, then again in 2010 as a midwife. Since 2012, she has helped MSF deliver babies all over the world, providing care where it’s needed most.
Now in Nigeria, Aisha is sharing her knowledge with local staff, working to improve skills and capacities for safer deliveries. The generosity of our global community makes her vital work possible and empowers more health workers with the skills they need to save lives. Learn more about Aisha and other MSF staff on our blog.
