Week of February 22nd, 2021
|
The risk of exposure to COVID-19 is still very real.
We need to be extra vigilant and mitigate the risks of infection, particularly for those who are older or who have pre-existing conditions. For the sake of our collective health, please remember to wear a mask when you leave your home, practice social distancing, and wash your hands frequently. This pandemic has shown us that the health of one is the health of all so we all need to take responsibility for our common well-being.
There are some easy ways to safely stay connected to the chapter, such as: signing-up on the front page of our website to receive our weekly newsletter, checking the calendar on the site for upcoming virtual events, and joining DSA-LA’s Slack.
In solidarity,
DSA-LA

DSA-LA Launches New Campaign: Neighborhood Solidarity Program
|
It’s time for Angelenos to join together with our neighbors and demand the resources we need to survive. Through the DSA-LA Neighborhood Solidarity Program, we will unite with our neighbors — block by block — to build the organization we need to stop evictions and expand economic relief during this crisis and beyond.
Cancel Rent, Expand Economic Relief! We are coming together to demand a response to crisis that works for the working class!
We are creating hyper-local neighborhood groups that center tenant organizing, mutual aid work, and political study, so we can build community with our neighbors and bring them into our shared political struggle, growing our numbers and political power.
Together, we can refuse to go back to a world with insurmountable debt, insecure and unsafe jobs, homelessness, and housing instability. Together, we can imagine, demand, and build a future organized on the basis of human need and well-being — not the accumulation of private profit.

DSA-LA Conflict Resolution Resources
|
DSA Los Angeles has tripled in size over the past year. We have more than 5,000 members, but currently only 10 people serving on our Conflict Resolution Team!
The CRT is currently backlogged and needs more help in order to do this unglamorous, but incredibly important work.
If you are committed to anti-oppression and are interested in helping to build healthy internal culture, please sign up to get more information about serving on the CRT.
There are two primary roles:
Ombudspeople - Someone that members can talk to when they're experiencing a difficult situation and need support or advice.
Harrassment and Grievance Officers - When a grievance has been filed by one member against another, HGO's help guide the members through a process based on principles of restorative justice in order to seek healthy solutions and prevent future harm.
You can learn more by clicking here.
Please apply to join the team today!
Note -- an application is not a formal commitment. If you are interested in talking to someone and learning more before you commit, please fill out the application!

Community Defense to Stop Evictions & Save Seniors!
|
Thursday, February 25 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm
|
Please RSVP HERE join SaveOurSeniors (SOS), the Progressive Asian Network for Action (PANA), and DSA-LA’s Healthcare Justice Committee for a car caravan on Thursday 2/25 at 11:00 am to help prevent evictions of Japanese seniors in the middle of a pandemic.
Event Location: 2221 Lincoln Park Ave, Los Angeles CA 90031
Long-term residents who receive needed bicultural and bilingual care at their nursing home are being threatened by international developers who want to convert the elder care facility into apartments. The potential eviction of these Japanese seniors represents the intersecting problems of predatory capital, housing injustice, and a broken healthcare system that leaves many without needed long-term services and support. Worse yet, the developers plan to move the seniors from their “zero Covid facility” to one where 111 have tragically lost their lives.
DSA-LA’s Healthcare Justice Committee will be joining the “car picket” on Thursday, 2/25 at 11am. Make signs for your car with pro-Medicare-for-All and anti-eviction, anti-displacement, and anti-racist messages.
Event Location: 2221 Lincoln Park Ave, Los Angeles CA 90031
**This is an entirely socially-distanced protest! Plan to stay in your vehicle during the entire event. If you need to put signs on your car after exiting the freeway, please park away from the event site and do so there. Signs will be provided contactlessly at the event site by a volunteer if you do not have any. There will also be a paper provided with a phone conference link to listen to press conference speakers during the event.**
Please contact [email protected] with questions or for more information.

Mutual Aid's Rules & Roberts Training
|
Sunday, February 28th @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
|
The Mutual Aid Committee is proud to announce our new parliamentary decision-making training, based on Paolo Pedercini's RULES AND ROBERTS, a democratic role-playing game for 3-3000 people that uses Robert's Rules of Order as its base. This 3-hour campaign will give you a fun, fresh, and enjoyable introduction to the sometimes-confusing system of parliamentary process that we use both in the Mutual Aid Committee, and in DSA-LA in general.
If you're interested in participating, please make sure to check out the rulebook here, and fill out the (quick!) character sheet, to prepare for your JOURNEY into the LAND of PARLIAMENTARY FANTASY, which RESEMBLES but is LEGALLY DISTINCT FROM other POPULAR ROLE-PLAYING GAMES.
