Dear John,

Liberty turns 87 today.

We were founded in 1934 in response to the brutal policing of the hunger marches – a series of protests that had arisen because of inequality, mass-unemployment, and oppression.

We’ve faced many challenges and had many successes over the years. From defeating ID cards to limiting pre-charge detention and our recent court success against police use of facial recognition technology.

Much has changed since Liberty was founded – but threats to our rights remain and our work is needed more than ever.

The pandemic has dramatically changed how we live. The Coronavirus Act has given the police huge new powers that have been used disproportionately against already over-policed communities.

We’ve been fighting for rights to be respected throughout the pandemic, as well as providing easy to understand information on the rules as they’ve been changing and developing.

Our rights protections are under threat with the current ‘review’ of the Human Rights Act, that is squarely aimed at watering it down. At the same time, the Government is trying to limit the use of judicial review, which allows ordinary people to challenge those in power when they get it wrong.

You can help us face these threats and more as a Liberty member.
