“I have worked with people that are Hispanic," says Arizona GOP Rep. Debbie Lesko, "You know, we're compassionate people, but for goodness sakes, we have to take care of American citizens, or people that are here legally, first.” Rep. Lesko's remarks are cruel, racist, and disturbingly ignorant.
Not only is Lesko wrongfully implying that all Hispanics are undocumented, but she conveniently chooses to ignore that a large percentage of undocumented immigrants are the “essential” or frontline workers holding our communities together -- brave individuals who take jobs knowing they'll be highly exposed to COVID, despite many having little-to-no access to any health care. If our government fails to protect our undocumented immigrants, our economy and our economy will collapse.
We both know that racism and bigotry can have no place in our government, especially when so many thousands of lives are on the line. Officials are making decisions NOW about where the next waves of vaccines will go, and we want you to weigh in with your thoughts on the matter. Please, let us know:
