People For Member,
Today, the late Rep. John Lewis would’ve been 81.
[ [link removed] ]As we honor his life today, please join us in the fight for voting
rights by signing our petition to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act>>
In 2013, the Supreme Court’s right-wing majority gutted a key section of
the Voting Rights Act of 1965 in its decision in Shelby County v. Holder.
What followed was an onslaught of voter suppression policies and new
barriers to the ballot box, pushed by far-right legislators and election
officials in states and counties across the country.
The Shelby County decision, as devastating as it was, reserved the ability
of Congress to update and modernize the Voting Rights Act and restore its
strength. The John Lewis Voting Rights Act does just that, and then some.
There’s never been a greater need for robust federal legislation to
protect the right to vote. Frustrated by their defeat in the 2020
presidential election, right-wing lawmakers – who still control the
majorities is many state legislatures – are aggressively pushing new laws
to rig the playing field to their advantage by making voting more
difficult, especially for voters of color and low-income voters.
On John Lewis’s birthday, you can help carry on his legacy and his
lifelong fight for justice by taking action to defend voting rights and
strengthen our democracy.

Thank you for everything you do. Now let’s keep making “good trouble.”
In community,
Amol, People For the American Way
