Last week, Food & Water Watch filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission against Smithfield, the nation’s largest pork producer.
Smithfield claims it has an “industry-leading sustainability program” and is close to achieving an environmental goal of “100% compliance, 100% of the time.” The reality? It’s one of the biggest industrial polluters in the United States. Smithfield regularly violates environmental regulations, and makes false and misleading claims about the sustainability of its pork products and the company’s environmental record.
For years, Smithfield has been wantonly polluting our air and water with seas of hog waste. Its hog factories have destroyed rivers, killed millions of fish and endangered public health, especially in rural environmental justice communities. And instead of actually cleaning up its act, Smithfield is investing in slick tag lines and false solutions — like using factory farm waste to create biogas — to dupe consumers hoping to buy sustainably-raised products. We’re fighting to force Smithfield to stop its lies and greenwashing, but we can only do this with your help.
The massive amount of pig manure Smithfield creates — enough to fill at least four baseball stadiums to the top each year — threatens water and hurts public health. Smithfield uses dangerous industrial practices, like spraying pollution-laden waste on agricultural fields, to deal with its massive waste problem. Our communities are in danger.
