Voter suppression tactics are nothing new -- something the late Congressman John Lewis knew all too well.

That's why 56 years ago -- during the height of the Civil Rights movement -- Congress passed the Voting Rights Act , which aimed to protect the votes of people of color by making discriminatory voting practices illegal.

Despite this historic legislation, voter suppression tactics are still alive and well. Between voter roll purging, unnecessarily strict voter ID laws, and intentionally limited polling places, Republican-led legislatures are doing everything in their power to make it harder for traditionally Democratic voters to participate in our democracy.

What can we do? We can start by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which will help restore voting rights.
