As Texas suffered through widespread blackouts and deadly arctic temperatures, Governor Greg Abbott went on Fox News and blamed—get this—wind power.
Then Tucker Carlson went even further, claiming that the blackouts in Texas were caused by the Green New Deal . . . which hasn’t even been passed into law!
Make no mistake: the disaster in Texas was caused not by green energy, but by fossil fuels. Most of the power failures were from natural gas and freezing pipelines. Coal and nuclear plants faltered as well.
And more important, climate change directly contributes to the increased frequency of polar vortex events like what hit Texas last week.
But that hasn’t stopped conspiracy theorists like QAnon congresswoman Lauren Boebert from sharing a fake photograph of a wind turbine supposedly being de-iced that millions of Americans will believe to be true.
We must beat back the fossil fuel industry’s lies and far-right conspiracy theorists to solve the climate crisis. And we must defeat, once and for all, the corporate media’s “both sides” false equivalency on basic science.
