Friend, one of the things that makes me so proud to be a Kentuckian is our tradition of caring for our communities and always lending a hand to neighbors in need.

Today, I want to shine a light on an organization founded by Rajon Rondo, who is serious about Kentucky's legacy of community service (and another favorite Kentucky tradition—basketball). The Louisville native, former University of Kentucky basketball star, and NBA champion started the Rajon Rondo Foundation to help other young people reach their full potential.

Any athlete can tell you some of the most valuable lessons on hard work and overcoming obstacles are learned in the locker room. The foundation is developing a Community Locker Rooms program that will expand access to the support and motivation that helps students thrive. Kids will be assigned to a “locker room,” which will provide rewards for achieving educational and behavioral goals. The program's system of positive reinforcement is a constructive alternative to the punitive measures like suspension, expulsion, or even incarceration that many young people experience.

A child’s opportunities in life should not be dependent on their race or their zip code or their family’s income, but the truth is that’s all too often the case. This Black History Month, I encourage you to go beyond honoring the historical contributions and achievements of Black Americans. I encourage you to support organizations that are working to provide the next generation of Black Americans with the resources and opportunities they need to achieve their full potential, regardless of background. Chip in now to join me in supporting the Rajon Rondo Foundation’s life-changing work.

Thank you,
Amy
