Right now, hundreds of Donald Trump's dangerous right-wing judges make up nearly 30% of the federal judiciary. Trump did more to remake the courts than any president in recent memory -- and we've been urging President Biden to do something about it.
Luckily enough, a golden opportunity is opening up: At least 35 federal judges have announced their intent to take “senior status” since the inauguration, meaning that they will take fewer cases and Biden will have the ability to nominate their replacements.
It's hard to overstate how important this is. Trump's judges have had devastating effects -- they granted fewer than 3% of asylum seekers' applications compared to an average of nearly 30% nationwide. And one of Trump's judges in Texas recently overturned the Biden administration's moratorium on deportations.
President Biden and his Democratic senators need to make this one of their top priorities, no doubt -- but they haven't yet.
And what worries us the most is how eager Mitch McConnell has proven himself to be to stop Democrats from getting anyone on the federal bench. He kept Merrick Garland from his rightful seat on the Supreme Court and blocked 72% of President Obama's appointees from claiming their gavels.
With a 50-50 Senate, there's no telling what chaos McConnell could wreak. And with plenty of opportunities for the GOP to take the chamber back next year, Biden's golden opportunity could slip away.
