Weekend Reading

Dear John,

Thank you to everyone who took action this week to urge President Biden to reverse harmful migration policies! While the administration has taken important steps in the right direction, the U.S. must do more to protect the rights and lives of all who seek safety—and work to address the root causes of migration. If you haven’t already, send a message to the president today! [link removed]

Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:

Standing up to anti-Asian racism: [link removed] As we hear more reports of harassment and attacks against Asians in California and around the U.S., here are some ways you can help respond to racism and build the safe and peaceful communities we all deserve, writes AFSC’s Mary Zerkel and Zareen Kamal.

Protecting tenant rights in Atlanta during COVID-19: [link removed] AFSC’s Home Defenders program supports community members to organize tenant associations, demand fair treatment from landlords, and stay in their homes, writes Ashia Gallo.

Immigration is a Black Issue: [link removed] This Black History Month, let’s recognize the struggles of the four million Black immigrants in the U.S. and all who came before them—and work to stop anti-Black racism in our immigration system, writes AFSC’s Peniel Ibe.

Add your name: Support a progressive legislative agenda!: [link removed] Join AFSC, Daily Kos, and partners in calling on the new administration to advance policies that prioritize the needs and rights of all people—including ensuring health care for everyone, dismantling racism in all our institutions, and ending the corporate greed that fuels poverty and income equality.

AFSC and Quaker Peace & Social Witness nominate two organizations for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize: [link removed] The nomination of Mwatana for Human Rights and the Campaign Against Arms Trade is intended to draw attention to the Judicial Review being conducted in the United Kingdom about arms trading in Saudi Arabia, to support U.S. protests about renewed arms sales to the United Arab Emirates, and to highlight the suffering of the Yemeni people in the proxy war being conducted in their country.

New report shows Biden received more than $5 million from the border security industry: [link removed] A new report—co-published by TNI Institute, AFSC, and Mijente—examines what this corporate influence means for the future of U.S. border policy. “We must challenge any messages from the Biden administration and Congress that a ‘smart’ border is an acceptable alternative to physical walls, and divest ourselves from these harmful industries,” says AFSC’s Dov Baum.

Thanks to everyone who filled out our recent survey!: [link removed] Here’s a recap of what we heard from all of you. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us to learn, grow, and better support your commitment and activism for social change, writes AFSC’s Beth Hallowell.

Be well and take care
