Friend,
Rep. Deb Haaland, a Laguna Pueblo woman and 35th generation New Mexican, is poised to be the next secretary of the interior. If confirmed, she'll be the first Native American Cabinet secretary in U.S. history, marking a meaningful step toward racial justice and climate progress.
Predictably, though, politicians with entrenched fossil fuel interests are trying to block her confirmation. In recent weeks, Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT), Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY), and Rep. Pete Stauber (R-MN) have all caricatured Haaland as a "radical."
The facts tell a different story: Recent Data for Progress polling shows that many of the policies Haaland would enact as interior secretary—like land and water conservation and increasing renewable energy production on public lands—are popular with voters across the political spectrum. In the 116th Congress, Rep. Haaland introduced more bills with bicameral support than any other member of the House, and four of those bills were signed into law—an impressive feat in our polarized era.
Deb Haaland has stood up for me and for you. Today, we're asking you to stand up for Deb, in advance of her confirmation hearing next week.
Sign your name today to show your support for Rep. Deb Haaland and her historic nomination and confirmation.
Rep. Haaland has a history of standing up to the fossil fuel industry—in word and in deed. In 2016, she traveled to Standing Rock, where she cooked green chili and tortillas for the water protectors resisting the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. If confirmed as interior secretary, she'll play a crucial role in keeping fossil fuels in the ground, creating jobs in renewable energy, and enacting President Biden's whole-of-government approach to the climate crisis.
Under her leadership, the department will implement popular policies that will make these United States—and the 574 federally recognized Tribal Nations across the country—more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous.
I could not be more thrilled to see Rep. Haaland on the cusp of joining President Biden's Cabinet. Are you? Add your name to our petition today to show your support for Haaland before her confirmation hearing on Tuesday.
With gratitude,
