Friends —
Black History Month is a reminder that we must continue to celebrate and honor the work of our predecessors — like my late colleagues John Lewis and Elijah Cummings — by recommitting to racial justice and equity. My father was a Lutheran minister in Detroit who worked with Martin Luther King Sr. after his son was killed and pushed to desegregate housing in the 1960s. He set an example for me — one that I still live by — to always do what is right, even when it’s not easy. As we recognize the long history of both victories and challenges faced by Black Americans, we understand that the fight to secure racial equality has spanned over generations. And that fight must continue. There are long-overdue measures our nation must take to dismantle systemic racism and ensure equality for everyone — addressing racial disparities in healthcare, policing, access to housing, and much more. I ask you to commit to this fight today in honor of Black History Month — but remember that we must honor that commitment every day of the year. Thank you. Scott Peters
