Joe Biden and his administration know just how important it is that our government looks like the people of this nation, and that is deeply reflected in the Cabinet he has assembled. I'm so excited that the Biden Cabinet will be the most diverse in history.
The administration's nominee for interior secretary, Rep. Deb Haaland from New Mexico, is making history in her own right. As an enrolled member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe, she will be the first Native Cabinet secretary. Native people have been excluded from our country's leadership for far too long -- Rep. Haaland's is a voice we need to hear in a powerful position.
The interior secretary's duties include oversight of the country's land use and management and conservation efforts, as well as of agencies like the National Parks Service and Bureau of Indian Affairs. For the first time, a Native person will direct our government's relationship with Native tribes.
When Rep. Haaland's confirmation hearings start next week, we need senators to approve her nomination immediately. To show them you're with her, please sign our petition supporting Rep. Deb Haaland today.
We have gone too long without listening to Native people. We've gone too long without rectifying the historical harms our government did to the tribes on whose land we live. We've spent too much time ignoring the very real and dangerous impacts of climate change on our health, our economy, and our livelihoods. With Rep. Haaland's leadership, that can begin to change.
But far-right Republican politicians have already said they'll oppose her nomination, and one senator intends to try to block her confirmation. To them, policies that aim to protect our environment and conserve our natural resources are too "radical" -- meanwhile, the same politicians portray themselves as champions of public lands.
GOP senators did nothing to stand up to Trump's truly radical appointees in the interior department -- even though they posed a real threat to our country's lands and resources. Now, Republicans need to give up the partisan pandering and do the right thing. They need to confirm Rep. Haaland as interior secretary immediately.
