Eleven years ago, the Supreme Court ruled in Citizens United v. FEC that corporations are people. Since that ruling, there's been too much money, too many special interests, and not nearly enough accountability in our democracy.

People are justifiably frustrated by how broken our politics are. During a global pandemic and a national economic crisis, American voices need to be at the center of Congress's efforts to build our nation back better. But instead, too many politicians are putting special interests above the public interest.

I stand by the belief that if our democracy isn't working for the people, then it's not really working. Now, with a slim majority in the Senate and President Joe Biden in the White House, this year is our chance to re-introduce the For the People Act and pass essential campaign finance reform.

The For the People Act includes two bipartisan proposals I wrote — provisions that increase transparency in elections and crack down on politicians who cheat. It also includes measures that will strengthen voter protections, protect our elections from foreign interference, and tackle gerrymandering by requiring states to use independent commissions to draw congressional district lines.
