John, did you know that half of Congress is made up of millionaires?
While millionaires only make up less than 7% of the American population[1], they make up a shockingly large portion of our federal government. Why is that?
The answer is more simple than you’d realize: Running for office is as expensive as it is time-consuming. Ordinary folks who aren’t wealthy often don’t have the time—and more often, they just don’t have the resources—to quit their jobs to run a campaign, hire staff, and pay the bills.
That’s where organizations like Truth to Power come in, John. Our work specifically revolves around electing candidates—no matter their socioeconomic standing—who will stand up to the corporate special interests and corruption that has dominated our government for far too long.

In 2020, we were able to send six powerful Truth to Power candidates to Washington and join Rep. Katie Porter to fight for bold, progressive change in the halls of Congress. These candidates weren’t millionaires—they were real working people, including a nurse and a teacher.
We proved that candidates who unapologetically stand for working families and progressive values can win, despite the fact that our political system inherently discourages working people from running for public office. And we’re ready to do it again in 2022.
