Today we aired a special broadcast that looked back at the past 25 years of Democracy Now!'s fearless, truth-seeking reporting. 

In 2016, Democracy Now! traveled to the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota to document the historic Indigenous fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). On that Labor Day weekend, DAPL security guards unleashed dogs and pepper spray on Native Americans seeking to protect their sacred lands.
Democracy Now! caught it all on video. Our footage was viewed over 14 million times in just 24 hours and picked up by corporate media outlets across the country and around the world. 

A few hours before the attack, we spoke to Standing Rock Sioux historian, LaDonna Brave Bull Allard, an elder of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and founder of Sacred Stone Camp, where thousands of Indigenous water protectors gathered in 2016 to protest DAPL's construction.

We also looked back at our coverage from Ferguson, MO, where white police officer Darren Wilson fatally shot unarmed Black teenager Michael Brown in 2014. The shooting sparked mass protests and launched the Black Lives Matter movement. In the aftermath of the shooting, Democracy Now! spoke to the three co-founders of Black Lives Matter: Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi and Alicia Garza.

In 2011, Democracy Now! brought you extensive coverage of the Egyptian Revolution that ousted President Hosni Mubarak. While reporters from major network and cable outlets reported from their hotel rooms and studios, Democracy Now!'s Sharif Abdel Kouddous was in the streets of Tahrir Square, talking to those on the front lines of the historic uprising.

"Army tanks stood by as Mubarak's thugs came in and attacked crowds. There are many wounded. ... Here's a child about five or six years old. He is bruised on the side of his face. I asked his mother what happened and she said he is a revolutionary. He is fighting for his future," Kouddous reported.

On September 1, 2008, Democracy Now! producers Sharif Abdel Kouddous, Nicole Salazar, and I were among the journalists arrested during a police crackdown at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul.

As the riot police came at Nicole shouting, "On your face," she shouted back, "Press! Press!" Despite her cries, the police threw her to the ground and arrested her. 

As Sharif told the police to calm down, they kicked him twice in the chest, threw him against the wall, and arrested him as well.

When I got the call on the convention floor about what happened, I raced outside to where the riot police had formed a line, having fully contained the area. I asked to speak with the commanding officer to get my colleagues released. Instead, the officers arrested me, too.
We ultimately sued the Minneapolis and St. Paul police and U.S. Secret Service ... and won.
