Febuary 2021

Dear John,

We have so much good news to share, it’s hard to fit it all in one newsletter!

Earlier this month, we saw the biggest-ever package of Wild and Scenic River legislation (4,702 miles!) introduced by Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR). Days later, Congressman Mike Simpson (R-ID) announced his $33.5 billion dollar proposal for transformational, job-creating infrastructure investments across the Pacific Northwest, that includes the biggest river restoration effort in history on the Snake River.

And yesterday we released our dam removal report for 2020, where 69 more dams came down across the country.

These are just a few examples of how our team at American Rivers wakes up every day and proves -- together with our partners and all of you -- that positive, game-changing solutions are possible.

While this past year was full of challenges, restoring vibrant, free-flowing rivers has been a source of strength and progress for communities nationwide,” says Brian Graber, senior director of river restoration.

As we track the progress of the Biden-Harris administration in their first 100 days, we expect to see more critical actions for clean water and healthy rivers nationwide.

Thank you for driving this positive momentum. It’s your voices, your stories, and your support that make positive change possible for the rivers we love and the clean water that is vital to all life.

69 dams removed in 2020
Aging, outdated dams pose a serious threat in the U.S. and worldwide. The good news? 69 dams were removed in the U.S. in 2020. Which states are leading the way in river restoration? How can we increase the pace of dam removal to restore even more rivers? Learn more.

Restoring safeguards for rivers nationwide
On President Biden’s first day in office, he issued numerous executive orders impacting the regulatory rollbacks enacted by the last administration that weakened critical environmental protections. Find out which water- and river-related orders are under review.
