Dr. Shelby Steele and Jim Daly Discuss Racial Victimization and Empowerment on Focus on the Family
By: Glenn T. Stanton
Slavery, deadly civil rights abuses, and racism have been tragic and unforgettable parts of America’s history. As a nation, we’ve been struggling hard to overcome them with many voices rising in our national dialogue and their platforms have been bolstered. This week on the Focus on the Family radio broadcast, Jim Daly sat down with a very wise, but lesser heard voice on race in America to discuss what is actually needed to lift the African-American citizen up to fully realize the American ideal and dream.
Jim’s distinguished guest on the Wednesday and Thursday episodes of the Focus on the Family broadcast is Dr. Shelby Steele, a senior fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution where he studies, writes and lectures nationally and internationally on the consequences of contemporary social programs on race relations and racial politics. Steele is an award-winning author of five acclaimed books on race in America and one of the nation’s rare, truly independent thinkers.
Drawing from his decades of research and careful observation, Dr. Steele boldly asserts that when one analyzes the hindrances to black citizens gaining access to quality education, better, safer housing, ennobling employment, and overall human well-being for themselves and their children, racism is not at the top of his list. His position is that the breakdown of the family is the primary contributor, as well as the demonstrable harm of well-intentioned governmental social policies.

‘No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act’ Introduced in U.S. House of Representatives
|
By: Bruce Hausknecht |
Pro-life Americans concerned about seeing their federal taxpayer dollars go to funding abortions have, for the last 40 years, relied on previous bill-by-bill solutions such as the Hyde Amendment. That long-standing policy is in jeopardy, however, as there is increasing support in Congress and the White House for doing away with the Hyde Amendment in future funding bills.
To protect the policy that over 60% of Americans support, a bill, H.R. 18, was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives recently, also known as the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act.”
The bill would codify the Hyde Amendment by inserting it in the U.S. Code, thereby making a ban on the taxpayer funding of abortion a federal law that would apply to all current and future laws and policies of the U.S. government. The law would at that point not depend on the whims of any particular Congress. |

Oregon Department of Education Encourages Teachers Toward ‘The Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction’ |
By: Jeff Johnston
|
The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) recently sent out its monthly “Math Educator Update,” with suggested resources, seminars and information about the state’s math standards.
The newsletter asked if math teachers were “looking for a deeper dive into equity work” and pointed to an online learning opportunity, “Pathway to Math Equity Micro-Course 2.0: Valuing and elevating student discourse in the math classroom.” The class was described as an “online micro-course to dismantle racism in mathematics instruction.”
ODE’s email also directed teachers toward a toolkit related to the course, “A Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction.” The resource includes five free downloadable guidebooks, called “strides,” for math instructors to learn from and then to incorporate equity into their teaching. The strides move from “dismantling racism” to “creating conditions to thrive” to “sustaining equitable practice.” |

‘Daughters of Kobani’ – The Story of Kurdish Women Who Fought for Religious Freedom and Equality Against ISIS and Won
|
By: Brittany Raymer |
In 2020, the vast majority of news coverage here in the United States was dominated by the presidential election and the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the challenges and calamity of Syria’s civil war, and the continued impact of ISIS’ brutal expansion in the summer of 2014, has been mostly forgotten.
But despite the chaos and carnage, there is a surprising ray of hope in the region. This is the focus of journalist Gayle Tzemach Lemmon’s new book, “The Daughters of Kobani: A Story of Rebellion, Courage and Hope.” In it she shares the story of a small group of Kurdish female fighters who took up arms and led military operations against ISIS, with the hopes of establishing a freer society where women could experience equality and the Kurdish people, a suppressed minority in the region, could fully embrace their culture and protect other religious minorities, like Christians and Yazidis.
In the end, though there were casualties, they won and established an autonomous zone in northern Syria near the Turkish border that provides citizens with the freedom to practice their religion, even the ability to convert from Islam to Christianity, and includes a mandate that women must hold half of all government positions. |

WH Press Secretary Refuses to Guarantee Stimulus Money Won’t Go to Fund Abortions
|
By: Zachary Mettler
|
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki on Tuesday refused to guarantee that taxpayer dollars won’t go to fund abortions in the new $1.9 trillion stimulus bill that President Joe Biden is attempting to get passed.
The American Rescue Plan is expected to come to a vote on the floor of the House of Representatives next week. If passed, it will then go to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
Psaki took a question from Owen Jensen, a reporter for the Catholic television network EWTN. Jensen asked the press secretary if she could guarantee that “if the American Rescue Plan is passed that no taxpayer dollars will go to the abortion industry?”
“Which component of the American rescue plan are you referring to?” Psaki replied.
“A $50 million funding increase for the Title X program,” Jensen responded. “$750 million for global health activities and billions in funding for community health centers without applying the Hyde Amendment.” |
