This week, InSight Crime published an exposé on the criminal networks embedded in Honduras’ ruling party, from politicians at the local level to siblings of sitting President Juan Orlando Hernández. The investigation is the second in a six-part series on crime and corruption in Latin America’s tri-border regions: Central America’s Northern Triangle and South America’s Tri-Border Area. Other noteworthy reports this week included a look at how the death of Honduran nursing student Keyla Martínez in police custody has all the signs of an extrajudicial killing; a review of the short-term strategies the administration of US President Joe Biden will employ in its bid to take on corruption in Central America; and a look at how Madrid continues to be a base for transnational crime groups from Latin America.

Join us Thursday, February 25, when InSight Crime will discuss cross-border criminal dynamics in Paraguay. The event is part of our ongoing series of events on Central America’s Northern Triangle and the Southern Cone’s Tri-Border Area. Paraguay is a contraband smuggler’s paradise thanks to its lax regulatory and law enforcement oversight and endemic corruption. The South American country has also evolved into a key link in the regional drug trade. InSight Crime Co-director Steven Dudley will be joined ([link removed]) by Ángela Olaya, the project’s coordinator, and Carlos Peris, an investigator with Paraguay’s Universidad Católica Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, who will map out the country’s criminal actors and illicit economies using our online dashboard, which was developed during the two-year project. The discussion will be moderated by Juan Martens, a professor of criminology at the Universidad Nacional de
Pilar in Paraguay. The event kicks off at 3 p.m. Paraguay time and can be viewed in English and Spanish. And if you missed this week’s discussion on Honduras, you can view it here ([link removed]) .

"Criminal groups are certainly involved: illegal mining generates some US$2.4 billion a year for these syndicates, prompting InSight Crime to call it Latin America’s fastest growing criminal economy and a criminal gamechanger."

** A Crash Course on Environmental Crime
------------------------------------------------------------

In late January, InSight Crime Co-director Steven Dudley held a virtual workshop with 32 journalists from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala on how to investigate environmental crime. The workshop was part of an ongoing effort by Ciclos de Actualización para Periodistas (CAP ([link removed]) ), a Guatemala-based group that offers special training to journalists. Dudley and InSight Crime investigator Hector Silva Ávalos have given several workshops to journalists through CAP. The journalists use the methodology outlined in the workshops in their own work at their respective media outlets. See more about the environmental crime workshop here ([link removed]) .
