Dear Friend --
The Long Beach Unified School District has announced that K-5 instruction will begin on March 29. All K-5 teachers and school staff will have had an opportunity to be vaccinated with both doses before reopening. Teachers and staff deserve to be vaccinated and safe. LBUSD has also made it clear that any families who wish to keep kids home for the semester and continue online learning will be able to do so.
Reopening our schools and the timing of the opening is up to our school district, and they are working closely with our Health Department to follow all CDC and State guidelines. We promised that we would vaccinate our teachers, and I’m proud we are able to do so. Middle and high schools are set to reopen later in April, but that is still dependent on meeting state health benchmarks. For more information from LBUSD, click here <[link removed]>.
Long Beach continues to make progress on all vaccinations. To date, nearly 80,000 vaccine doses have been administered, and more appointments are being filled each day.
We are getting close to completing second doses for everyone who was first vaccinated in January. For anyone who was first vaccinated in January, you should already have received an email to schedule your second dose appointment. If you have a second dose question, please email
[email protected].
If you were first vaccinated in February, please continue to wait for an email from the Health Department with your appointment opportunity. You do not need to call or email to check your status.
We are making great progress and I am hopeful for the days and weeks ahead. Please continue to do all you can to keep each other healthy.
Thank you and stay safe,
Mayor Robert Garcia
