Millions in Texas are still without power in below-freezing temperatures, some even without running water. Families are using their cars for warmth, many with no way to cook food. And as of right now, another storm is on the way.

Instead of focusing on relief, some Texas elected officials — including Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Senator John Cornyn — chose to use this moment to spread lies about how renewable energy and “frozen wind turbines” caused the blackouts.  It’s inhumane, counterproductive, and flat out wrong.

We’re joining our local partners at TEJAS (Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services) to raise money for direct relief and combat these dangerous lies.

If you’re able to help, please chip in to help TEJAS and 350.org provide supplies and other needs in fenceline communities and stop the spread of dangerous misinformation. Together, we will build a powerful climate movement to defeat the fossil fuel industry.

Nearly 90% of Texas’ energy comes from fossil fuels. It was the failure of fossil fuels and leadership’s failure to invest in our infrastructure that caused the blackouts, not wind turbines.

Fossil fuel executives line the pockets of politicians like Senator John Cornyn with millions of dollars every year, so it is no big surprise that they’re spreading lies. It’s what they’re paid to do.

This misinformation is dangerous, and unless we pursue a Just Recovery that invests in infrastructure and preparedness, we can expect more crises like this.

If you can afford it – please split a contribution between TEJAS and 350.org today. Your donation will provide direct relief for families on the ground in Harris County and surrounding counties and help us hold politicians and fossil fuel companies accountable for causing and spreading misinformation about these blackouts.
