President Trump knew exactly what he was doing when he told the Nation and the insurrectionists his big lie. After repeatedly lying about winning the election, he told those who stormed the capitol, "If you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore."

His lies, actions, and promotion of conspiracy theories led to the deaths of least five people, injuries to nearly 140 law enforcement members, and far more collateral damage. He put the lives of reporters, congressional staff, members of Congress, the custodial and food service staff, his own Vice President, and others at risk. Yet, he has shown no remorse.

None of this was in doubt before impeachment hearings began, and the irrefutable facts presented by House impeachment managers built a compelling case for conviction. The President attacked our democracy, violated his oath of office, and committed a high crime against our Constitution, and should have been barred from serving again.

It is unfortunate that many officials refused to vote for conviction even as they acknowledged these facts. We deserve more leaders who will stand for what's right even when it means breaking with their party, as seven Republican senators did last week in the most bipartisan impeachment proceedings in our history.

I voted to convict the former President, based on the evidence presented, and I will always vote to defend the foundational principles of our democracy.
