Dear John,
Today, the Equality Act was reintroduced in Congress by Representative David Cicilline (D-RI) in the House. President Biden, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and Senate Majority Leader Schumer (D-NY) have made passage a top priority for the new Congress. The legislation has been introduced in various forms several times since 1974, and in 2019 received its first full vote in the House. We are hopeful 2021 is the year it finally becomes law.

We’re so proud that Equality Federation’s member organizations, from Equality Florida to Freedom Oklahoma to Basic Rights Oregon, have been leading the charge for nondiscrimination protections at the local level for decades, building momentum for a national solution. They are committed to mobilizing their communities and working in lawmakers’ backyards to make sure they know the Equality Act is about people, not politics. Although 21 states and more than 330 cities have passed LGBTQ nondiscrimination protections, half of LGBTQ people live in states that still lack express, comprehensive statewide laws. As organizations working in the states and cities that LGBTQ people call home, our members know this patchwork of protections is unsustainable and leaves too many people behind.
The Equality Act will immeasurably improve the day-to-day lives of LGBTQ community members in every zip code and bring the nation closer to its promise of liberty and justice for all. As the strategic partner to state-based organizations, we commit to doing our part to ensure the public’s demand for passage of the Equality Act is heard all across the country.
Let’s keep the momentum going! Please make your $21 donation to our work today. [[link removed]]
