Scientific Influences on
Early Childhood Education: From
Diverse Perspectives to Common Practices
Scientific Influences on Early Childhood Education: From Diverse Perspectives to Common Practices, edited by Dominic F. Gullo and M. Elizabeth Graue, examines the scientific perspectives that have shaped early care and education (ECE). As the ECE field strives to enhance young children’s development through rigorous research and effective policymaking, it is essential to understand its scientific roots. An understanding of the expansive interdisciplinary origins of ECE can inform program and policy improvements, including the promotion of anti-racist and culturally and linguistically responsive ECE practice.

This publication provides a wealth of knowledge on the biological, neurological, social, educational, psychological, political, and economic sciences that shape the ECE field. Research across these disciplines has influenced our understanding and framing of child development and the learning potential of diverse groups of young children.

Scientific Influences on Early Childhood Education offers a new framework providing context and insights into how the history of scientific thought informed the evolution of the ECE field. This book sheds new light on the advancement of scientific inquiry in the ECE field.

The Foundation for Child Development is proud to have contributed to this body of work in “Policy and Political Influences on Early Childhood Education,” a chapter co-authored by President and CEO Jacqueline Jones and Vice President Sara Vecchiotti. Their chapter traces the evolution of the impact of research on public policy in America’s ECE landscape.
