Please join us for the third webinar of the series on the "China Initiative," Building Coalition Against “China Initiative” Discrimination: Fighting racial targeting of Asian Americans and communities of color, past & present, on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at 8pm ET/ 7pm CT/ 6pm MT/ 5pm PT/ 3pm HT.

The racist targeting of Asian American and Asian immigrant scientists, researchers, and students—particularly those of Chinese descent— through the "China Initiative" echoes past xenophobic national security initiatives that put immigrant communities and communities of color under unjust government scrutiny. This webinar, the third in this series, explores the civil society responses to Japanese incarceration and discrimination against Japanese Americans during World War II, and the targeting of Arab, Middle-Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian (AMEMSA) communities after 9/11, to inform how civil rights organizations and university leaders can more effectively challenge the new administration to end the “China Initiative” and the unfair scrutiny of Asian American and Asian immigrant scientists, researchers, and students.

Keynote Speaker:
* Congresswoman Judy Chu was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in July 2009. She represents the 27th Congressional District, which includes Pasadena and the west San Gabriel Valley of southern California. In 2011, Chu was elected Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, which advocates for the needs and concerns of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community across the nation. She helps lead the Tri-Caucus, a joint effort with the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Panelists:
* Dr. Karen Korematsu is the Founder and Executive Director of the Fred T. Korematsu Institute and the daughter of the late civil rights icon, Fred Korematsu. Since her father’s passing in 2005, Karen has carried on his legacy as a public speaker, educator and civil rights advocate. She shares her father’s passion for social justice and education and in 2009 established the Fred T. Korematsu Institute to advance racial equity, social justice and human rights for all. The Institute’s work has expanded from K-12 civic education to promoting public civic engagement and participation.
* Becky Monroe is the director of the Fighting Hate and Bias program at the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. She was previously the director of the Divided Community Project, supporting local leaders in addressing the reasons underlying community division, including racism and other forms of discrimination.
* Dr. Leslie E. Wong served as President of San Francisco State University, one of the nation’s premier urban comprehensive universities. He led more than 3,000 faculty and staff as they served a student population of over 30,000. Dr. Wong was committed to providing SF State students with an exceptional educational experience fostered by the diversity, creativity and dedication of SF State’s faculty, staff, students and alumni.

Moderator:
* Faiza Patel serves as co-director of the Brennan Center’s Liberty and National Security Program, which seeks to ensure that our counterterrorism laws and policies respect constitutional values and promotes transparency and accountability in national security matters. She has testified before Congress opposing the dragnet surveillance of Muslims, developed legislation creating an independent Inspector General for the NYPD, and organized advocacy efforts against anti-Muslim laws and policies.
