Dear John,
COVID-19 has disrupted nearly every aspect of the U.S. immigration system. And over the past seven months, the American Immigration Council tracked the major immigration law and policy changes and outlined their impact.
We just released this updated analysis and recommendations in the Special Report, “ The Impact of COVID-19 on Noncitizens and Across the U.S. Immigration System [[link removed]] .”

The report explains why:
*
The
COVID-19
immigration
bans
are
thinly
veiled
attempts
to
implement
drastic
changes
to
our
legal
immigration
system
under
the
guise
of
preserving
economic
opportunities
for
native-born
Americans.
*
Reopening
the
immigration
courts—without
appropriate
precautions—risks
the
safety
of
immigrants,
attorneys,
and
court
staff.
*
Immigration
and
Customs
Enforcement
is
responsible
for
allowing
COVID-19
to
spread
inside
its
detention
centers.
The report also highlights important data, including:
*
How
immigration
restrictions
continue
to
keep
the
number
of
visas
granted
25
percent
below
the
norm.
*
The
number
of
people
sent
to
immigration
detention
after
being
arrested
has
reached
75
percent
of
pre-pandemic
levels.
*
20,000
people
have
a
pending
Migrant
Protection
Protocols
case
and
either
remain
in
Mexico,
in
a
dangerous
state
of
limbo,
or
have
given
up
and
returned
to
their
home
country.
Reports like this expose how the Trump administration has exploited a public health crisis to shut down our immigration tradition.
The Council will continue to track these developments and fight to ensure that the United States remains a welcoming country.
Sincerely,
