Ethiopia’s remote Somali region, 13-year-old Mahadiya is just one
of 26
million children unable to attend school because of the coronavirus
pandemic. As a result, she misses out on critical studies and daily
school meals.

remarkable initiatives that Gifts of Joy support — like Save the
Children’s camel library — Mahadiya and her peers have the
opportunity
to continue to read and learn at home. |

this program, 21 camels, which can each carry up to 200 books at a time
in wooden boxes strapped to their backs, have delivered more than
39,000 supplementary reading books to over 22,000 children in 33
villages. |

the man who brings the library to Mahadiya. He is one of 33 community
volunteers who were trained by Save the Children as reading camp
facilitators, to help children learn to read. |

Health Workers quickly referred Salma for immediate treatment for
pneumonia and malnutrition at a Stabilization Center for sick and
at-risk children. |
