** Drugmaker Perrigo has forged a new alliance with the British Lung Foundation (BLF) to drive what the company calls “better lung health in the UK.” The company’s nicotine replacement therapy brand, NiQuitin, will support the BLF with an undisclosed fixed donation. As part of its joint initiative, Perrigo will prioritise three things which include:
------------------------------------------------------------

*
** providing better information and data on air pollution;
------------------------------------------------------------
*
** empowering individuals to act and protect vulnerable people from the harmful effects of unclean air in the UK; and
------------------------------------------------------------
*
** encouraging people to take up forms of active transport, including physical activity to improve their lung health.
------------------------------------------------------------

** The most recent collaboration has resulted in a survey exploring UK adults’ attitudes towards their lung health and the importance of fresh air. The research found that two in three people who currently smoke are more motivated to cut down or quit altogether due to the coronavirus pandemic. According to NHS Digital, there is still 14% smoking prevalence in the UK and around 78,000 people die prematurely from smoking-related illness each year.

NiQuitin aims to contribute to the reductions of these figures by supporting those who are looking to start or continue their “quit journey,” while improving clean air together with the BLF for healthier lungs.

E-cigarette users in Germany may have to pay more for their vape products under a newly drafted bill from the health ministry. Cigarettes are also set to become more expensive.

Vapers have benefited from comparatively low tax rates. However, for the first time, the tobacco tax would also apply to nicotine-containing e-cigarettes. The higher tax rate is also to apply to “heat-not-burn” products and pipe products. The draft proposal is due to go to a departmental vote on Monday.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) director Rüdiger Krech, the total economic cost of smoking in Germany is about 97 billion Euros a year, including illness and job loss.

** Pakistanis face up to $1.3 billion in health costs annually due to diseases caused by tobacco products.

A research study by the Center for Global and Strategic Studies – a public policy institute and think-tank in Islamabad reveals that cardiovascular diseases alone cost the country $0.9 billion annually. Other major diseases caused by tobacco products include lung cancer and tuberculosis.

Pakistan is included among 15 states bearing the worst impacts of smoking-related health problems. Data showed that 22 million Pakistanis consume tobacco-related products daily, causing deaths of 160,100 individuals annually. Pakistan is a signatory to the World Health Organisation (WHO) to take effective measures to reduce the demand for cigarettes by adopting stronger tax measure. The WHO has recommended tobacco excise taxes account for at least 70% of the retail prices for tobacco products to discourage its use.

The study pointed out that various institutional and resource constraints have played their role in the failure to control tobacco prices in the country, resulting in the lowest average price of a cigarette pack in Pakistan. The huge influence of tobacco industry over legislative bodies is a major factor behind the delay in imposition of the tax levy, the study said, adding that the low taxes were also contributing to growing use of the tobacco products in the country.

The study recommends that the Government introduce comprehensive reforms in its taxation and planning policies to curtail the growing use of tobacco, especially among youth.
