John—

In 2020, many state legislatures were set to enact ambitious new gun safety laws. Unfortunately, the bulk of these plans were put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year's spike in gun violence proves that lawmakers must take bolder steps in 2021.

Today we released the latest edition of our Annual Gun Law Scorecard [[link removed]], which grades all 50 states on the strength of their gun laws. Year after year, the Scorecard shows that gun laws work: states with strong gun laws tend to have lower gun death rates.

After millions took to the streets to demand racial justice this summer, a number of states and cities passed police reform legislation, acknowledging the critical link between policing and gun violence. Our Scorecard highlights the deep racial disparity of both COVID-19 and gun violence [[link removed]], with Black Americans disproportionately impacted by both crises.

To truly build a safer country for all Americans, Congress and the new administration must take decisive action to stop gun violence and address the deadly racial inequities exhibited by the pandemic, police brutality, and community violence.

It’s long past time that proven, lifesaving gun safety laws are enacted everywhere in America. Chip in today to fuel our efforts. [[link removed]]

Gratefully,
Laura
