Thank you Impeachment Managers

Image

Thanks to the incredible work of these 9 members of Congress -- including Colorado's own Congresswoman Diana DeGette and Congressman Joe Neguse -- we witnessed the most bipartisan vote to convict an impeached president in history at 57-43 (7 Republicans joined the 50 Senate Dems).

A thank you to U.S. Senators Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper for defending our democracy and voting "Yes" to convicting former President Donald Trump.

While the majority of Republican senators couldn't find their courage and stand up to Donald Trump, we can be excited that the future of our country is in the hands of Democratic leadership -- to build back better and build a better future for everyone.

Colorado County Spotlight!

Logan County

Located in Northeast Colorado, Logan County covers 1845 square miles of the Great Plains and South Platte River Valley. The town of Sterling is the county seat. It is bordered to the north by the state of Nebraska, to the east by Sedgwick and Phillips Counties, to the southeast by Yuma County, to the south by Washington County, to the southwest by Morgan County and west by Weld County. Created in 1887, the county was named for General John A Logan of the Union Army

Logan County has a rich history. In AD 1000 to 1400 the Upper Republican and Itskari cultures, lived in earth lodges, hunted Buffalo, fished and made ceramic pottery. By the mid 15th century, most likely because of drought, many left the area and it soon became home of the Lakota, Cheyenne, Kiowa and Pawnee tribes.

Anglo-Americans homesteaders increased during the 1840s building homes and farms. In 1873, near present day Sterling, the King, Perkins, Prewitt, and two Smith families and David Leavitt, a railroad surveyor, opened up the first post office in Sterling.

Sugar Beet farming helped Logan County increase population, including Mexican farm workers fleeing the violence of the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920). An estimated 45,000 Mexicans moved to Colorado during that time. In Logan County and elsewhere, Mexican laborers and their families lived in itinerant poverty, mostly in shacks and other poorly furnished dwellings near the fields. Nonetheless, they were the driving force behind the wealth that the sugar industry brought to Sterling and other towns in northeast Colorado.

Today Logan is home to many large farms and ranches. It is also home to the 2,500 inmate Sterling Correctional Facility. Logan County is also home to the North Sterling State Park, Overland Trail Park and Museum and Prewitt Reservoir all offering a day a fun and exploring.

Peter Younger is the Chair of Logan County Democrats. It’s a pretty bright shade of Red in Logan County but the Democrats work hard to have their voices heard. There are approximately 1,750 registered Democrats, 6,657 registered Republicans and 4,714 Unaffiliated voters in Logan County. 88.01% cast their ballots in the 2020 election. If you would like to know more about the Logan County Democrats check out their Facebook page The Logan County Democratic Party.

How Joe Neguse and Stacey Plaskett Plan to Wield Their Influence After Impeachment

The New York Times

From a corner of the Senate chamber last week, Delegate Stacey Plaskett, the congressional representative from the Virgin Islands, was struck by the poignancy of the scene in front of her.

Next to her, seated at a narrow wooden table, was Representative Joe Neguse of Colorado, the son of Eritrean immigrants and the first African-American to represent his state in Congress. Across from them at his new desk was Senator Raphael Warnock, the first Black Democrat to represent the South in the Senate. Ms. Plaskett was the lone elected Black woman in the room.

Colorado's Legislature reconvened its 2021 session on Tuesday facing an ambitious agenda: Short and long-term economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic, restoring drastic cuts to K-12 and higher education, creating jobs by investing in transportation infrastructure, and curbing health care costs — including pursuing a state-run public option for health insurance.

Under New Management: Colorado’s New House Speaker Faces Challenges As Legislature Reconvenes

CPR News

For the third year in a row, Democrats hold a majority in both chambers. Things have changed in the House though, where both parties are operating with new leadership.

House Democrats chose Denver Rep. Alec Garnett to lead the chamber shortly after the November election. His selection as Speaker didn’t come as a surprise to anyone in political circles; the 37-year-old had served as House Majority Leader under the previous Speaker, KC Becker, who was term-limited.
