We’ve made progress in Washington state to combat the gun violence epidemic and make our schools safer with increased background checks and waiting periods.

Reflecting on the third anniversary of the horrific Parkland shooting this month, however, I am reminded that we still have work to do. Today, I stood with the Alliance for Gun Responsibility at their Lobby Day to commemorate Parkland. We honor the victims of gun violence and push for more action.

My bill to ban the sale of high-capacity magazines is before the Washington state legislature. The facts are clear: states that ban the sale of high-capacity magazines experience one-third the number of annual deaths from mass shootings.

Common sense reforms like this save lives. Do you support reforms that make our families, schools, and communities safer?

Washington voters overwhelmingly supported I-1639, which included enhanced background checks and waiting periods for assault weapon sales. When the NRA sued to remove these common sense provisions, my office defended the initiative. Fortunately, the court rejected their arguments and upheld the initiative.

These reforms make our families, communities, and schools safer.

As a father, I cannot begin to imagine what the families of Parkland victims and survivors have endured. I can promise you this: as long as I’m the People’s Lawyer, I will advocate for the safety of our children and communities — no matter the powerful interests standing in my way.

Thank you,

Bob
