John,

February is Black History Month -- a time to honor and celebrate the contributions of Black Americans to our country's history.

Here in Washington State, the contributions of Black pioneers, educators, artists, activists, and others have played a crucial role in shaping our state's history. From musician Jimi Hendrix to activist Powell Barnett to former Deputy Secretary and King County Executive Ron Sims, Black history is Washington State history.

Black History Month isn't just a time to honor Black Americans, it's also a time to recommit to the fight for justice and equity. Every day, Black Americans are denied the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Whether in our schools, our criminal justice system, our hospitals, or our economy -- racism has become embedded in our society.

Last summer, we saw people across the nation take to the streets and declare that Black Lives Matter. These protests became one of the largest movements in American history, but our work is far from over. We must continue the pursuit of justice not just during Black History Month, but every month.

I'm proud to elevate this important issue in Congress. Last year, I co-sponsored the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect against discrimination at the ballot box, and the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to improve accountability and equity in our police departments and criminal justice system. I'll always work to make our country a fairer, more just place for all.

This Black History Month, I hope you'll join me in taking time to recommit to fighting for justice and equity for all Americans. Learn more about the NAACP's efforts to advance civil rights and find out how you can support their work.
