prime minister to adopt
carbon fee and dividend
As the United Kingdom prepares to host the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference later this year (COP26), climate scientist and CCL Advisory Board member Dr. James Hansen has sent a letter to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson urging him to adopt carbon fee and dividend and set an example for the rest of the world in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. “As long as the price of fossil fuels does not include the costs to society, people suffer for the sake of fossil fuel industry profits,” Hansen wrote. “The way to rectify this is a rising carbon fee with 100 percent of the funds distributed uniformly to legal residents.” In his letter, Hansen also suggested that Prime Minister Johnson’s team work with CCL-UK to develop the fee-and-dividend policy, known across the pond as “climate income.” To read the whole letter and some perspective from CCL Global Strategy Director Joe Robertson, check out the blog post on Citizens’ Climate International’s website.
In other news: Black voices of environmental leadership: As we observe Black History Month, CCL is highlighting on social media the work of Black leaders in the environmental movement. Get to know leaders like marine biologist and author Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson; Michael Regan, nominee for EPA Administrator; and Sharona Shnayder, co-founder of Tuesdays for Trash. Conversations on race: Citizens’ Climate Lobby will host monthly conversations about the intersectionality of race, culture and climate. You will gain insights about yourself that will help build your strength as a climate activist. The first workshop, limited to 200 participants, is this Friday, Feb. 19, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. ET. Register here. Positions still open: Applications are still being accepted for State and Local Media Coordinator and a Conservative Outreach Director.
