John -- No matter what Sean Hannity or Tucker Carlson say, the human suffering in Texas right now is not due to renewable energy. It’s the result of lawmakers prioritizing corporate donors over the long term needs of their constituents.

Right-wing media is blaming the emergency in Texas on frozen wind turbines and claiming that a Green New Deal would further devastate the country; but the reality is that wind and solar are the only sources that are over-performing during this weather emergency.
 

Deregulation, unchecked greed, and our reliance on fossil fuels are at the root of this crisis.

In Iowa, the second-largest wind power producer in the nation, temperatures have hovered around -10° for over two weeks, and the wind turbines there continue to operate just fine. In fact, across the plains, only 15% of wind turbines are offline compared to over 50% of natural gas generation.

A spokesperson from ERCOT - Texas’ energy authority - even said wind turbines were “the least significant factor” in the lack of supply.

So if natural gas is the culprit, why are Republican lawmakers and pundits screaming from the rooftops about wind turbines? 

It’s simple: They have an agenda, and that agenda is greed. That agenda is lining the pockets of their corporate donors in the fossil fuel industry. That agenda is keeping the lights on in corporate offices while millions of Americans freeze in their homes.

Science and climate deniers have no business holding positions of power and influence. As the climate crisis worsens, scenes like what we’re experiencing this week will only grow more common. 

To protect the lives of every American, we must pass a Green New Deal and escalate the transition from fossil fuels before it’s too late.

To do that, we must replace lawmakers who deny reality with representatives who embrace truth, science, and equity.
