I will never forget January 6, 2021. I was on the Senate floor — just a few days after being sworn in — when a violent mob broke into the Capitol. I can still remember the sounds and scenes from that day. The noise of the mob as it grew larger and larger.

Lawmakers, journalists, and staffers were put in harm's way because Donald Trump peddled a dangerous lie that the election was stolen from him. I walked through those halls, and I saw the destruction. Never could I have imagined seeing that in the U.S. Capitol.

When I was sworn in as a Senator, I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

I upheld that oath by voting to convict Donald J. Trump after he incited a violent, deadly insurrection against the U.S. government.

It was an attack on our democracy. It was an attack on our republic. The evidence presented clearly showed that Trump incited these people, he organized them and sent them to our nation’s Capitol.

But the majority of my Republican colleagues let him off the hook. They chose political party over the American people, and they dangerously emboldened Trump and his enablers.

We need to stop them from further dismantling our democracy by holding them accountable at the ballot box in 2022. That’s why I’m asking you to chip in to help us repair the damage they’ve caused to our country. I appreciate anything you can give.

Folks, the great people of New Mexico elected me to the United States Senate. They placed their trust in me to do what’s right. I will continue to honor that trust and work to protect our fragile democracy to make sure the events of last month never happen again.
