Late Friday, the Washington Post broke the news that Postmaster General Louis DeJoy is preparing to put all first-class mail onto a single delivery track that would result in massive price increases and slow down mail delivery.
That’s right, the head of the USPS, a Trump Republican mega-donor appointed by a Trump-dominated Board of Governors, wants to make changes to services that will increase delivery times for people relying on prescription medication, credit card bills, and mortgage payments to arrive on time.
We need to fix the Postal Service, not make it worse. That starts by firing Louis DeJoy and replacing him with someone who will run this agency at full capacity, as a diminished Postal Service could lead to major disenfranchisement among rural communities.
Here’s how it can happen: President Biden can start by filling the four empty seats on the board of governors, taking control from Trump-appointed cronies, and demand that they replace DeJoy with a Postmaster who will save the USPS instead of trying to kill it.
The future of the Post Office is at stake.
Even before these changes, the Postal Service was forced to admit in a Federal Court that 38% of the mail these new rules would impact were already missing the 2-day delivery deadline for local first class mail by the end of 2020.
But that was the point wasn’t it? We know Trump wanted Louis DeJoy to delay mail from day one.
Trump believed if he could slow down mail-in ballots, it might delay enough Biden votes from arriving in time to be counted before election deadlines. DeJoy, who also has financial interests in companies that have business ties with the Postal Service, tried to decommission mailboxes and mail-sorting machines across the country.
It could’ve worked, if Congress hadn’t stepped in to stop DeJoy and forced him to bring most sorting machines back online.
Now, we need President Biden to take action and stop this threat once and for all.
Only the President can appoint members to the Postal Service’s board of governors and only the board of governors can fire Louis DeJoy. Join me in fighting to save the Post Office before it’s too late.
President Biden has already done a lot to turn the country around and reverse some of the worst policies and executive actions of Donald Trump.
